Scandinavia is a historical and geographical region centered on the Scandinavian region in
Northern Europe . It is most commonly defined as the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, Sweden. Finland is commonly included
into the group as well as Iceland.
Scandinavia has no official political borders. The region is therefore often defined according to the conventions
of different disciplines or according to the political and cultural aims of different communities of the area.
One example of the Scandinavian region as a political and cultural construct is the unique position of Finland.
A wider definition of Scandinavia includes Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. However, this larger region
is officially known as the Nordic Countries, a political entity as well as cultural region where the ties between the countries
are not merely historical and cultural, but based on official membership.
